Switch Rod Heaters

Application: Actuator Rod Snow and Ice Melting

Switch rod (SRFH) heaters are designed specifically to
keep switch actuator rods free and clear of snow and
ice. These heaters have a flat heating surface and are
positioned underneath the rails directly below the
switch’s actuator rods. The heater’s standard output is
nominally 250 watts/ft2 at the specified operating
voltage. Optional rail braces are available for anchoring
heater in place.

Design. . .

SRFH heaters are manufactured to meet the specific
needs of each transit company based on the available
power supply. A typical installation will include a review
of the rail and switch profiles and a determination of the
power requirements for the application.

Installation. . .

The standard SRFH heaters are a flat measuring 8” wide
X 36”, 60” & 72” long with a 3⁄4” high flange along each
long side to assist in directing snow and ice melt away
from the switch. These heaters are rugged, yet flexible
enough to be easily adapted to the requirements of a
rail switch rod installation. The standard electrical
connection is made with simple crimp type connections,
insulated with heat shrink to make a watertight
connection. Two field adjustable tie down brackets are
supplied with each heater for anchoring the heaters
between the wooden ties.

Construction. . .

Inside the SRFH heater is a rugged, parallel path
resistive heating element that is encapsulated between
two layers of high temperature fiberglass reinforced
silicone rubber. This encapsulated element is further
encased between two galvanized steel panels for further
protection. Three foot cold leads are connected in a
galvanized junction box located at one end of the
heater. Lead length and configuration can be modified to
the application requirements.
