Switch Rod/Ballast Heaters

Application: Actuator Rod Snow and Ice Melting

Switch rod/Ballast (GPRH) heaters are designed
specifically to keep switch actuator rods free and clear of
snow and ice.  These heaters have a flat heating surface
and are positioned underneath the rails directly below
the switch’s actuator rods or attached directly to the
adjacent ties.  The heater’s standard output is nominally
85 watts/ft2 at the specified operating voltage. Optional
rail braces are available for anchoring heater in place.

Design. . .

GPRH heaters are manufactured to meet the specific
needs of each transit company based on the available
power supply, connection option and length required.

Installation. . .

The standard GPRH heaters are 3⁄4” high assemblies
measuring 7” wide X 36”, 54” & 72” long.  These rugged
heaters use Cam-Lok watertight twist to lock connectors
for ease of installation and removal.  Heaters can be
purchased with or with out the required Cam-Lok 15 foot
long extension leads for making power connection.

Construction. . .

Inside the GPRH heater is a rugged, power limiting type
heating cable affixed and spaced to provide a uniform
temperature profile across the inside surface of the top
heater panel. The heater cable is secured in place on the
panel with 2” aluminum tape. The 6 foot long heater
cold lead is terminated inside the unit and exit through
the end of the heater.

A single layer of 3/8” silicone foam is laid over top of the
heater cable and terminations covering the entire
internal area.

The lid and panel shall be held together using the steel
piercing rivets applied with a rivet stamping press.
GPRH heaters shall be painted with Safety Yellow or
Light Gray epoxy as specified by the customer and
marked with red lettering three inches (3“) high. The
lettering shall say “DANGER-HIGH VOLTAGE-THIS SIDE UP”.

Further red lettering shall be one inch (1”) high stating
“RHPS” and the heater model number. The model
number, heater wattage @ operating voltage and
company name shall also be stated on tag located on
top side of heater near cold leads.  Heater voltage shall
be printed on a metallic tag attached to the cold lead.
