Rail Web Heaters

Application: Switch Rail Snow and Ice Melting

RWHC heaters are an integral part of RHPS’s
transportation snow and ice melting systems. Designed
specifically for rail switch heating, RWHC heaters are
designed for ease of installation and operation.

The RWHC heaters have a flat, flexible heating surface
that conforms to the web of the rail, to provide
maximum heat transfer from the heater to the rail. This
allows RWHC heaters to operate at a lower watt density
then traditional calrods thus increasing the heater’s life
span and lowering the operating costs.

Design. . .

RWHC heaters are manufactured to meet the specific
user’s needs based on the available power supply. A
typical design will include a review of the voltage
available, rail profile and switch layout to determine the
power requirements and mounting limitations for the
specific application. The heaters are designed to operate at a nominal 9 watts per square inch of heater contact surface at the specified voltage.

Installation. . .

RWHC heaters are rugged, yet flexible enough to adapt
to the requirements of rail switch installations. RWHC’s
are fastened firmly to the rail with spring clips using a
lever action clip tool. The electrical connections are
simple AMP “quick-disconnect” connectors with metal
lock ring, making heater-to-heater and heater-to-power
connections fast, easy and watertight. A Non-Hardening
Heat Transfer Compound is also used when installing
RWHC heaters to enhance thermal conductivity between
the rail and the heater providing optimum performance
and heater life.

Construction. . .

The RWHC heater is manufactured to withstand the
hostile atmosphere of railway switches. It is composed
of a parallel path, heating element that is encapsulated
between layers of high temperature fiberglass reinforced
silicone rubber. A layer of high temperature silicone
foam insulation to promote maximum rail heating
efficiency backs the encapsulated heating element.
These components are then housed in a durable 304
stainless steel assembly. These assemblies are available
in 3” wide (tall) by 8, 10, 12, 18 & 24” inch long models.
